the user manual in the other hand?" The LCD display screen on The Mermaid is clear and friendly, and has a pleasant blue backlit illumination. It has multiple language display capabilities on its information display screen. 32 voice chord audio accompanies lock operations. The Mermaid's operating system (OS) is designed to be easy and intuitive. It is simple to learn, and significantly reduces the "learning curve" compared to biometric devices that may have only half, or even a third as many input keys. A full industry standard twelve digit keypad accompanies the exterior access point of The Mermaid. This triggers instant familiarity for anyone familiar with a modern telephone. The same is true of the five way navigation control pad and dual selection buttons that pilot the interior control interface. Self-explanatory menu items follow the Mermaid user throughout the display screen menus and assist in every process. The Mermaid is thus a breeze to operate on a day-to-day basis, making secure area entry a pleasure rather than just another daily burden. Want to enrol yourself as the master, administrative fingerprint? Simple. Just switch the unit on, and press the enter button repeatedly, until you see the menu to enter fingerprints. Then allow your finger to be scanned, and you are now the master. Compare this with other devices (where the complexity of setup is almost insurmountable) and you will see how well the interface of the Mermaid is designed. Whilst ease of use is a given for the authorised, any unauthorised attempts to use The Mermaid will be met with a two minute total system lockdown. So it's only easy when it's meant to be that way! Another potential aid to simplicity is that information stored within the device can include user name and relevant information, if the administrative operator so wishes. Enquiries to the database can be made via name, date, record number or sequentially. Catering to flexible usage patterns, Mermaid users can be placed into three categories: as Masters, Normal Users or Guests. It is easy to switch between normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) modes, either on the lock, or through the network access on a Network Mermaid. Installing The Mermaid It could easily be thought that all of these features and strength come at least at the price of ease and installation: but with The Mermaid this is not true at all. Following the Scandinavian tradition of the perfect marriage of form and function, this beautifully designed device is as easily installed as any other mortise lock, and it requires minimum damage to the door. The Mermaid is designed to be easily installed by the non-professional. Only two cables run within the Mermaid installation: one runs from the interior body to the door lock (to control locking): the other is a small ribbon cable that runs between the two bodies of the lock. Both are easily detached from the lock body with standard connectors (that fit in the one, proper way only). In its standard form, The Mermaid is suitable for wooden or steel doors with thicknesses varying from 35 to 60 millimetres (1.377-2.362 inches). Optional customised accessories can be supplied to accommodate door thicknesses up to 100 millimetres (to 3.937 inches).
